Recently, the Indian smart phone market was rocked with the arrival of a smartphone, called the Xiaomi Mi3, made by a company which was virtually unknown to any of the Indians. If you are a gadget enthusiast, or if you follow the Indian smartphone industry closely, you should have no reason to be excited about another chinese company introducing their fancy new phone into the market. Because, in recent years, there has been a slew of smartphones being released by new companies, almost every month. So what exactly did Xiaomi do differently to create such a buzz here in India?
Well, lets look at this company called Xiaomi. Like Gionee, Xiaomi is also a Chinese electronics company which is privately owned, and they design, develop and sell smartphones, apps and consumer electronics. They are one of China’s biggest electronics companies. They have even been dubbed “Apple of China”, partly because, the marketing strategies of Xiaomi has often been described as “riding on the back of the cult of Apple” (as per Wiki), and partly because the the chairman and CEO of Xiaomi, follows the Steve Jobs’ style of approach to products. He even dresses like Jobs and does product presentations like the former Apple CEO. In just four years, Xiaomi Corp. has evolved from a startup to outselling Apple in China. So they mean business.
Most of all, the reason why people get so excited when they hear Xiaomi (at least in India nowadays), is the phone they are bringing to India. The Mi3, is now in the market, figuratively speaking, because it has been a hot commodity and was sold out within 30 minutes of its official release. It had also famously caused Flipkart to crash, after minutes of launching the Xiaomi Mi3. All this frenzy for a chinese made phone, u might ask. Well this phone has made all the main stream smartphone companies a run for its money, because what it brings to the table, no other manufacturer has an answer for it, yet.
The Mi3 has underneath, wait for it..
A Quad-core, 2.3Ghz, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB RAM, 5″ Full HD (1080p) IPS LCD Display, 13 MP rear facing camera and a 2MP front facing camera, both capable of recording video in full 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. The Mi3 comes with Android 4.3 Jellybean out of the box, upgradable to 4.4.2 kitkat.
You might be thinking what is so fresh about a flagship phone having flagship specs, rt? Well, I have left the best for last, because even though this phone might have the specs similar to those of the Note 3, the latest in the Note line up from Samsung, (which costs Rs. 38455 in Flipkart), the Xiaomi Mi3 costs Rs. 13999 (also in Flipkart). To put it into perspective, when it was launched, the Note 3 cost more than Rs. 50000. So, what do you think about that?
I am genuinely excited about this phone. It may be a less known chinese company, but with the price that the Mi3 is offered at, and as many as 34 service centers opened in India, Xiaomi might just become the next household name in the Indian Smartphone market. Lets wait and see.
